So where are we going on our rendezvous? Lake James State Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. Just outside Morganton, NC is a sleepy little town called Nebo. From this quiet township, you can find a wealth of outdoor activities, including camping, hiking, and some really great fishing. The lake is surrounded by mountains, and yes, they really do look blue in the warmer months. (It's all the pollen in the air that does the trick.)
However, the area was settled primarily by Scots-Irish and German immigrants. That started the ol' brain cogs 'a turning. What if Scots-Irish people were the the only thing to come to my beloved Blue Ridge Mountains? Hmmm.... Water's Lover was born!

Ellen wanted nothing more than to go home after a miserable week of camping at the lake with Mark. In fact, she's had enough of his making her miserable in general and plans to break up with him when she gets home. Sitting by the water’s edge, she finds the lake has more to offer than beautiful scenery and sweltering heat. But will she escape Mark’s wrath and find a way to keep love’s magic?
The week seemed longer and hotter than necessary. The atrocious insects practically gnawed at her. The days blazed, and the nights sweltered. Ellen Kincaid thought this to be the worst vacation ever. She wanted Sunday afternoon to hurry up and end her suffering.
Her boyfriend wanted to go camping by Lake James in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Raised in the country, Mark Jessup claimed he wanted to give Ellen the experiences not found in her big city life. In the three years they'd dated, he took her on every outdoor event imaginable. She hated them all. Secretly, she thought he enjoyed her misery.
Ellen woke up in the tent alone. The pitch-black night made it impossible to see her watch to tell the time, but she knew Mark often stepped out for some cooler night air. Having no woodland skills and afraid to be out in the dark, Ellen suffered, cooped up in the tent until dawn. The humid night made the tent feel like a sauna. Desperate for some fresh air, she felt brave enough to join him.
